The Social Factors Affecting The Political Awareness of Senior High School Students of Holy Family Academy
Abstract
This research is centered around political awareness and the specific factors that have an influence on it. The study seeks to determine what social factors control the political awareness of students. The locale of the research is in Holy Family Academy located in Angeles City, Pampanga and is focused on its senior high school students. Through analysis of multiple previous literature on the topic, the researchers decided to limit the study to five social factors, namely socioeconomic status, political interest, educational background, occupational aspiration, and political participation. The study makes use of a quantitative research design and makes use of an online questionnaire as means of data collection. A Likert scale is used to quantify the responses of participants on the questions given which are arranged under each social factor. With the use of Raosoft Sample Size Calculator, a number of 81 respondents is recommended. The actual number of respondents totalled to 86, which are from the senior high school students of HFA, with an equal number of males and females coming from each strand and grade level. To interpret the data, the use of descriptive statistics, specifically means, was used to make a conclusion on the impact of each social factor on the respondents' political awareness. The conclusion gathered from the data is that the educational background of the student is the social factor with the most influence on their political awareness. Although, notable is the impact of their occupational aspiration, especially if they wish to pursue a career related to politics. Another point is that political awareness and interest do not necessarily equate to political participation which is why the study recommends that authorities in this matter must try to spark engagement in the youth.
