Subject
Student Research
Abstract
Currently, there is a growing number of Filipinos are migrating to other countries to support the needs of their family. With no choice, they leave their families behind to find a high paying job. Holy Family Academy has 431 students who are currently Sons and Daughters of OFWs (SDO). The school reaches out to them in various ways like conducting talks or seminars that are relevant for them. These students go through situations in life where they experience things that can only be dealt by them compared to normal students, which may affect their thinking and learning. With this, the goal of this research is to know the impact of having OFW parents to students' academic performance. This research conducted is a qualitative research and is a phenomenological research because it addresses the evident issue at present. We gathered our participants by using the intensity sampling method which chooses participants by their richness of experience, and homogeneous sampling which choose participants based on their similar characteristics. To collect data, we mainly used the internet by browsing on online books, studies, and credible articles. We also gathered information about SDOs in Holy Family Academy and the programs provided for them from Ms. Narciso, one of the school's LINGAP Personnel. We interviewed the chosen participants by asking them questions that is needed for our research. After, we transcribed recordings, gathered the transcripts, and analyzed them. It was found that they there is no direct relation between the absence and their academic performance, they can maintain their grades to be standard. They still long for the support of their parents especially in terms of education. Parental support to SDO's is one of the many ways to pursue what they started. It also serves as their motivation in whatever life may throw at them.
