Factors that Senior High School Students of Holy Family Academy Consider in Identifying Fake News on Social Media
Abstract
Fake news or also known as junk news is propaganda that consists of deliberate misinformation hoaxes spread via newspapers and broadcast news media or online social media. The rise of fake news highlights the erosion of long-standing institutional bulwarks against misinformation in the internet age. Concerns over the problem are global. However, much remains unknown regarding the vulnerabilities of individuals, institutions, and society to manipulations by malicious actors. A News system of safeguards is needed. From this problem, the current research serves as a response to this problem. This study aims to raise awareness of the effects of fake ones to lessen the prevalence of fake news in our community, the factors SHS students should consider when identifying fake news on social media. The participants are 15 grade 11 STEM students of Holy Family Academy, they are all in the same year level. The phenomenological research design was used in the current study because the researchers want to arrive at a description of the nature of the particular phenomenon(fake news), and the researchers want to identify the factors the Senior High School students of Holy Family Academy should consider in identifying fake news in social media. As a result of the data gathering and analysis, the study proves that knowing the author's name is one indication of a credible site and can help students in identifying whether an article is real or fake.
