Title
A Phenomenological Study on the Perception of Grade 11 Students Towards Sanctions
Subject
Student Research
Abstract
The implementation of the Republic Act 7610 was because of the rising count of child abuse here in the Philippines. But, sanctions are considered as acceptable violence according to Plan Philippines (2009). In Holy Family Academy, there are rules and regulations that each student must follow, or else, they will receive sanctions. With the lack of studies regarding sanctions here in the Philippines, moreover, in Holy Family Academy, the researchers conducted this phenomenological qualitative research that aims to determine the perspective of students regarding sanctions and to find a dominant characteristic that would describe how they feel towards sanctions. To get these, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews to get responses from ten grade 11 students. Then the responses were carefully analyzed and formed into themes. Through this study, the researchers found out that: (1) the recognition of sanctions leads students to improvements; (2) the fear of receiving further sanctions leads students to change their actions; (3) irrelevant factors on the effectiveness of sanctions. After obtaining these findings, the researchers compared their results to the results of other studies and were able to imply that: (1) the students' sensitivity towards/her parents and to his/her current situation plays a huge role in the effectiveness of sanctions; (2) the deterrent effect of sanctions become more evident after a student receives a sanction; (3) specificity is key, no formula should be followed by authorities when giving out sanctions. Instead, authorities should learn how to adapt to every case for sanctions to be as effective as they can be.
