Title
A Phenomenological Study on How English Anxiety Influences the Academic Performance of Students
Subject
Student Research
Abstract
The English Language is considered the universal language and the Department of Education in the Philippines implemented that the medium of instruction to be used from preschool to university is English. As a result, learners in Holy Family Academy may manifest English Anxiety. This issue was tackled by the researchers who want to know how English Anxiety affects the Academic Performance of students. To determine the participants from this research, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale(FLCAS) was answered by the whole grade 11 for the school year 2017-2018 to determine if they have English Anxiety. And then to get the nine participants for the interview would be the selection for the top three highest scorers per track. These academic tracks are STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), ABM( Accountancy, Business, and Management), and HUMMS(Humanities and Social Sciences). After the interview, the researchers interpreted the participants' answers. Findings have shown that the signs of English Anxiety include panic and discomfort. And these signs are extremely evident in subjects and any oral activity that would require the students to speak in English. On the other hand, even if the participants encounter embarrassing situations, they take it more as a challenge to improve themselves. And students of Holy Family Academy experiencing English Anxiety are only a few, 55 out of 255 to be exact. Lastly, the participants attested that the manifestation of their anxiety when it comes to English Anxiety negatively affects their academic performance.
