Title
2 in 1 Filter : Air Filter with a Built-In Water Filter Mechanism Using Plastic Bottles and Banana Peels
Abstract
One of the problem that the world is facing today is the growing number of trash and air pollution resulting in destruction of the ecosystem. The study aimed the help the community in reducing the possibility of inhaling toxic air by making a water-based device that will filter the air and its water at the same time by using Lacatan banana peels. In the study, the researchers identified if there are contaminants that has been accumulated and if the banana peels were able to filter the water. The device was put on test for one week for it to accumulate enough contaminants. After a week, contaminated water was sealed in the jar and some of the contaminated water was filtered. Filtered water was also put in a jar. These was sent in the Angeles City Water District to undergo physical-chemical analysis to identify if there are contaminants with the use of Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), a method that analyzes compounds in a solution. The results showed that the contaminated water contains an iron and manganese with a concentration of 0.06 and 0.055 respectively. In filtered water, it contains 0.01 iron concentration and 0.155 manganese concentration. With the given results, the Lacatan banana peels successfully decreased the concentration of iron in the water, but failed to lessen the concentration of manganese.
