Title
The Assessment of Participation of Grade 8 and 11 Students in Extracurricular Activities
Abstract
Extracurricular activities are offered by educational institutions to cater to the interests of their students as well as the development of their skills and talents as part of their individual growth. A comparison between the 2014 and 2018 reports of the United States Census Bureau observed a decline in student engagement in extracurricular activities. Due to this, there is a need to assess and analyze the integration of extracurricular activities in Holy Family Academy with its policies regarding the participation of Junior and Senior High School students. This research serves as an assessment of the participation of students in extracurricular activities offered by the institution. This study aims to assess the participation of students in extracurricular activities based on the perception of their preferred activities and their relationships with students, teachers, and adults involved in the aforementioned activities. The study follows a descriptive research design and adopted a questionnaire from Intagliata (2010) which assesses the engagement of students in their chosen extracurricular activities. The Grade 8 and Grade 11 students of Holy Family Academy are the respondents of the study. It proved that students' social inclinations have a major effect on their extracurricular preferences. The time spent on shared extracurricular activities promote relationships among students, thus, are more likely to be influenced by those who share interests among their fellow students. Student-teacher relationships and student-student relationships are factors that influence their social behavior and engagement in extracurricular activities where the former states that students receive honesty, respect, and care among the teachers and adults while the latter states that respect is bounded by attained peer relationships and is not gained from people
outside the circle.
