Abstract

Catcalling is widely regarded as a negative act already but why do people still think that catcalling is all right to do. It has had different perceptions to what kind of act catcalling actually is. This qualitative phenomenological study aims to see how catcalling perceived and give it a concrete definition. Since our study is a phenomenological study the best type of sampling to use is purposive sampling. We conducted semi-structured interviews. After the interviews, we have established through the interviews that the most common perception to catcalling is that it is a form of harassment that may happen to anyone regardless of gender, it may happen to anyone. Catcalling is a product of lust and/ or sexual attraction toward a person. The related literature provided us with a basis of how women perceive catcalling but left out the male perspective. In our study we interviewed males for us to be able to get a more unbiased perception of catcalling.
