Abstract

From a global perspective, experts have delved on the occurrence of course shifting and have deemed career indecisiveness as one of the factors that influence the said matter. Students resort to shifting to a different course when they lose enthusiasm and can no longer endure their current chosen courses (Marade, 2015). Albion (2000) accounted for in his study that a significant number of students characterized themselves as slightly or very uncertain about their careers. They also seem to be experiencing difficulties in their career decision-making process. This phenomenon is not only prevalent in the Philippines, but also in countries like the United States. About 30% of students under associate's and bachelor's degree programs had transferred to different majors within years of being initially enrolled at least once, as stated by the National Center for Education Statistics. Also, about 1 in 10 students change courses in schools more than once. In the Philippines, this average reaches an even higher percentage showing that 40% of students either drop out of college in their first year or fail to make it to graduation (CHED, 2008).
Consequently, in the Philippines, the K to 12 Basic Curriculum was implemented starting in the year 2011. It was developed in accordance with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) - the governing body overseeing college and university curriculum in the Philippines. The new curriculum requires two more years in high school before going to college. Preparing graduates for tertiary education is one of the objectives of the said program. In these two years, Grade 10 students are subjected to choose a track and a specific strand of their choice for Senior High School preferably related to the students' future college course. This indicates that the specializations or tracks the students choose are of great importance as they can utilize what they have studied in college.
