Subject
Student Research
Abstract
This Descriptive type of study aims to know how students perceive English as a Medium of Instruction. Teaching English as a second language is quite complex. A lot of students these days are used to the vernacular language and forget the importance and benefits the English language could offer. For some students who wish to broaden their knowledge learning English is a good way to do so. With getting a total number of 10 participants from the Senior High School by incorporating Purposeful Random sampling, an in-depth interview was conducted. The findings, there resulted in three factors, (1) Comfortability of students, (2) Usage of Language, and (3) Academic Purposes, that can help in determining the views of the students toward English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). With these findings, hopefully, teachers will be able to know how to handle and start their class discussions appropriately. The student population that is the primary focus of the article is the Senior High students, but the findings have implications for all students who struggle with learning EMI. This study wants to explore more about how students would think and see using EMI in their class. By doing so, a composition of three research questions was done to be guided in the study: (1) What are the students in SHS feel about using EMI? (2) What are the factors that discourage or encourage them to use EMI? (3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of using English inside the classroom?
